Prelims Daily MCQs - All Subjects + Current affairs (10 May)

1. With reference to The United Nations (UN), consider the following statements:

  1. All UN Member States are members of the General Assembly.
  2. India and Pakistan joined the UN after Independence in 1947.
  3. The Secretary-General of the UN is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a 5-year for a non-renewable term.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a) 1 and 3

b) 2 and 3

c) 1 only

d) 1 and 2

Ans: c

Exp: Only the first statement is correct.

All UN Member States are members of the General Assembly. States are admitted to membership by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

India was one of the original members of the UN in 1945. Pakistan Joined the UN in 1947.

The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a 5-year renewable term.

2. Consider the following statements regarding the Living Root Bridges:

  1. They are made by tangling Rubber Tree in hollow trunk of Betel Nut Tree.
  2. It grows stronger with time.
  3. It is associated with Garo Tribe.

Which of the above statements is/are correct:

a) 1 only

b) 1 and 2

c) 1 and 3

d) 2 only

Ans: b

Exp: The correct statements regarding the Living Root Bridges are:

They are made by tangling the roots of the Ficus elastica tree (also known as the Indian rubber tree) in hollow trunks of the Areca catechu tree (also known as the betel nut tree).

They grow stronger with time.

They are associated with the Khasi Tribe, not the Garo Tribe.

Therefore, only statements 1 and 2 are correct, which is option b) 1 and 2.

3. Consider the following statements regarding GM Mustard:

  1. DMH-11 Mustard variety is made by Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
  2. DMH-11 is a drought resistant variety.
  3. It is made using two genes – Barnase and Barstar – from a soil bacterium called Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens.

Which of the above statements is/are correct:

a) 1 and 3

b) 1 and 2

c) 3 only

d) 1, 2 and 3

Ans: c

Exp: The correct statements regarding GM Mustard are:

DMH-11 Mustard variety is made by the Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants (CGMCP), University of Delhi, not the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

There is no information to suggest that DMH-11 is a drought-resistant variety. Rather, it is a herbicide-tolerant variety.

DMH-11 is made using the Barnase and Barstar genes from a soil bacterium called Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens.

Therefore, only statement 3 is correct, which is option c) 3 only.

4. Kharai is a breed of animal known for swimming long distances in Sea. Kharai is a breed of which animal:

a) Dogs

b) Tigers

c) Camels

d) Horses

Ans: c

Exp: They are a rare breed of camel found in the salt marshes of the Kutch district of Gujarat. Their name is derived from the local word khara, meaning saline. It is well adapted to the saline desert environment and is known for its ability to swim (hence also known as ‘swimming camel’). They swim long distances in the sea to reach their grazing areas, usually more than 3 km at a time, even in deep waters. Kharai camels mostly feed on mangroves. They are considered a unique Eco-tonal species as they survive in the dryland ecosystem as well as the coastal ecosystem.

5.  Consider the following statements regarding Bacteria:

Gram positive bacteria retains colour on gram staining while gram negative bacteria does not.

Cell wall of gram positive bacteria is thin while cell wall of gram negative bacteria is thick.

Gram positive bacteria produces exotoxins while gram negative bacteria produces endotoxins.

Which of the above statements is/are correct:

a) 1 only

b) 2 and 3

c) 1, 2 and 3

d) 1 and 3

Ans: d

Exp: The correct answer is (d) 1 and 3.

Statement 1 is correct. Gram-positive bacteria have a thick peptidoglycan layer in their cell wall, which retains the crystal violet-iodine complex used in Gram staining and appears purple under the microscope. In contrast, gram-negative bacteria have a thinner peptidoglycan layer and an outer membrane that contains lipopolysaccharides, which do not retain the crystal violet-iodine complex and appear red or pink after counterstaining with safranin.

Statement 2 is incorrect. Gram-negative bacteria have a thinner peptidoglycan layer in their cell wall than gram-positive bacteria, and they also have an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides, which is not present in gram-positive bacteria.

Statement 3 is correct. Gram-negative bacteria produce endotoxins, which are released when the bacteria die and their cell wall breaks down. In contrast, gram-positive bacteria produce exotoxins, which are secreted by the bacteria and can cause disease even if the bacteria are not present.

6. In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 200 km/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:

a) 1 hr

b) 1.5 hr

c) 2 hr

d) 2.5 hr

Ans: a

Exp: Let the duration of flight is x hr.

600/x - 600/(x+½) = 200

By Solving =

600/x - 600/(2x+1) = 200

x(2x + 1) = 3

2x2 + x -3  = 0

(2x + 3)(x - 1) = 0

x =  1 hr.

7. There are 9 teams in Indian Premier League. Each team plays 2 matches with every other team at league stage. How many matches are played at league stage?

a) 36

b) 45

c) 72

d) 90

Ans: c

Exp:

There are 9 teams out of which 2 teams play at a time in one round.

Therefore number of combinations = 9C2

= 9x8 / (2x1)  = 36

Number of match in two round = 36 x 2 = 72.
