Prelims Daily MCQs - Science and Technology (24 April)

1. Consider the following statements in respect of High-Temperature Proton: Exchange Membrane (HTPEM) Technology.

  1. It takes methanol or bio-methane as the input and produces heat and water as its bi-products, which can be further used.
  2. Fuel cells developed under this technology can’t be used to fulfill distributed stationary power applications demands like in small offices.
  3. This technology is the core of the fuel cells that run above 150 °C.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a) 1 and 3 only

b) 3 only

c) 1 and 2 only

d) 2 and 3 only

Ans: a

Exp: India’s first indigenously developed high-temperature-based Fuel Cell System is based on High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (HTPEM) technology. It is a 5.0 kW fuel cell system that generates power in a green manner. It takes methanol or bio-methane as the input and produces heat and water as its bi-products, which can be further used. So statement 1 is correct.

In the field of clean energy, Fuel Cell distributed power generation systems are emerging as a promising alternative to grid power. The Fuel Cells fit well in India’s mission of replacing diesel with green and alternate fuels. Fuel cells developed under HTPEM technology are suitable for distributed stationary power applications like small offices and commercial units. So statement 2 is Incorrect.

HTPEM works on two modes of operation with respect to the source of fuel. One mode is based on the conversion of natural gas into Hydrogen by means of steam reforming and the second mode is based on the operation of Hydrogen with Oxygen obtained by the process of electrolysis. This technology is the core of the fuel cells that run above 150 °C. So statement 3 is correct.

2. Consider the following statements in respect of Gravitational waves (G-waves).

  1. Gravitational waves are created when two black holes orbit each other and merge.
  2. They travel at a speed lower than the speed of light.
  3. Gravitational waves are invisible and all movement of matter in space creates G-waves.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a) 1 only

b) 2 and 3 only

c) 1 and 2 only

d) 1, 2 and 3

Ans: a

Exp:

Gravitational waves have been inferred through the behaviour of orbits of twinned neutron stars, supermassive stars that have collapsed and are spinning around each other. They are created when two black holes orbit each other and merge. So statement 1 is Correct.

Gravitational waves are of orders so small that it would take a truly cataclysmic event such as the collision of blackholes or neutron stars or indeed the formation of the universe itself, for detectable waves to be generated. Gravitational waves are weakly interacting and are not easily scattered, they are incredibly fast. They travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second). So statement 2 is Incorrect.

Not all movements lead to massive or noticeable Gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are invisible and they squeeze and stretch anything in their path as they pass by. The most powerful gravitational waves are created when objects move at very high speeds.

Some examples of events that could cause a gravitational wave are:

when a star explodes asymmetrically (called a supernova)

when two big stars orbit each other

when two black holes orbit each other and merge.

But these types of objects that create gravitational waves are far away. And sometimes, these events only cause small, weak gravitational waves. The waves are then very weak by the time they reach Earth. This makes gravitational waves hard to detect.  So statement 3 is Incorrect.

3. Consider the following statements regarding thiamine:

  1. It is a water-soluble vitamin which cannot be made in the body.
  2. Scurvy is a deficiency of thiamine.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a) 1 only

b) 2 only

c) Both 1 and 2

d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans: a

Exp: Statement 1 is correct:- It is a water-soluble vitamin which cannot be made in the body.

Statement 2 is incorrect: Scurvy is a deficiency of Vitamin C. Beriberi is caused by a deficiency of thiamine.

4. Which of the following particles is/are included in a Hydrogen State?

  1. Neutron
  2. Proton
  3. Electron

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a) 1 only

b) 2 only

c) 2 and 3 only

d) 1, 2 and 3

Ans: c

Exp: An atom is made up of Protons and Electrons that balance each other’s charges. Except for hydrogen, all atoms have neutrons in their nuclei. 1 Electron, 1 Proton, and 0 Neutrons make up the Hydrogen State.

5. Consider the following statements regarding the Tyndall effect:

  1. It is the phenomenon in which the particles in a colloid scatter the beams of light that are directed at them.
  2. The visible beam of headlights in fog is caused by the Tyndall effect.

Which of the statement(s) given above is/are correct?

a) 1 only

b) 2 only

c) Both 1 and 2

d) Neither 1 nor 2

Ans: c

Exp: Tyndall effect can also be observed when a fine beam of light enters a room through a small hole. This happens due to the scattering of light by the particles of dust and smoke in the air.

Tyndall effect can be observed when sunlight passes through the canopy of a dense

Forest.

Answer the following two questions based on the passage given below.

Passage-1

In general, religious traditions stress our duty to god, or to some universal ethical principle. Our duties to one another derive from these. The religious concept of rights is primarily derived from our relationship to this divinity or principle and the implication it has on our other relationships. This correspondence between rights and duties is critical to any further understanding of justice. But, for justice to be practiced; rights and duties cannot remain formal abstraction. They must be grounded in a community (common unity) bound together by a sense of common union (communion). Even as a personal virtue, this solidarity is essential to the practice and understanding of justice.

6. With reference to the passage, the following assumptions have been made :

  1. Human relationships are derived from their religious traditions
  2. Religious traditions are essential to practice and understand justice
  3. Human beings can be duty bound only if they believe in god

Which of these assumption/(s) is/are valid?

a) 1 only

b) 2 and 3 only

c) 1 and 2 only

d) 1, 2 and 3.

Ans: a

Exp: Human relationships are derived from their religious traditions.

7.  Which one of the following is the crux of this passage?

a) Our duties to one another derive from our religious traditions

b) Balance between and duties is crucial to the delivery of justice in a society

c) Religious concept of rights is primarily derived from our relationship to god

d) Having a relationship to the divine principle is a great virtue.

Ans: b

Exp: Balance between and duties is crucial to the delivery of justice in a society.
