  • Presence of the Coriolis force
  • Small variations in the vertical wind speed
  • A pre-existing weak low-pressure area or low-level-cyclonic circulation
  • Upper divergence above the sea level system.

Q7. Which of the following statements is the most appropriate reason for earthquake waves developing a shadow zone?

(a) The composition of material in the shadow zone is impermeable

(b) The body waves (p and s waves) are deflected from the path when they pass from one medium to another.

(c) Secondary waves do not pass through the liquid medium (outer core)

(d) Both (b) and (c)

Correct answer: (d)

Explanation:

The layering of Earth has been inferred indirectly using the time of travel of refracted and reflected seismic waves created by earthquakes. The changes in seismic velocity between different layers cause refraction owing to Snell's law, like light bending as it passes through a prism. Secondary waves (S-waves) are shear waves that are transverse in nature. S-waves can travel only through solids, as fluids (liquids and gases) do not support shear stresses. S-wave shadow zone forms the boundary of the outer core as it is in the liquid state.

Q8. Which of the following statements with respect to the Kigali Amendment to Montreal Protocol National is/are correct?

Q9. Consider the following statements regarding the characteristics of Terrestrial Planets.

  1. The terrestrial planets were formed in the close vicinity of the parent star, where it was too warm for gases to condense into solid particles.
  2. The terrestrial planets are smaller than Jovian planets, and their higher gravity could hold the escaping gases.

Choose the correct statement.

(a) 1 only

(b) 2 only

(c) Both 1 and 2

(d) Neither 1 nor 2

Correct answer: (a)

Explanation:

The first four planets are called Terrestrial, meaning earth-like, as they are made up of rock and metals and have relatively high densities. The rest four are called Jovian or Gas Giant planets. Jovian means Jupiter-like. Most of them are much larger than the terrestrial planets and have a thick atmosphere, mostly of helium and hydrogen.

(i) The terrestrial planets were formed in the close vicinity of the parent star, where it was too warm for gases to condense into solid particles. Jovian planets were formed at quite a distant location.

(ii) The solar wind was most intense nearer the sun, so it blew off lots of gas and dust from the terrestrial planets. The solar winds were not all that intense to cause similar removal of gases from the Jovian planets.

(iii) The terrestrial planets are smaller, and their lower gravity could not hold the escaping gases

CSAT Questions and Solutions

Q11.  A bag contains 50 P, 25 P and 10 P coins in the ratio 5: 9: 4, amounting to Rs. 206. Find the number of coins of each type respectively.

(a) 360, 160, 200

(b) 160, 360, 200

(c) 200, 360, 160

(d) 200, 160, 300

Correct answer: (c)

Explanation:

Let the ratio be x. Hence no. of coins be 5x ,9x , 4x respectively

Now given total amount = Rs. 206

=> (.50)(5x) + (.25)(9x) + (.10)(4x) = 206 we get x = 40

=> No. of 50p coins = 5x = 200

=> No. of 25p coins = 9x= 360

=> No. of 10p coins = 4x = 160

Q12. There are three languages represented by three circles. The numbers given represent the number of people who speak those languages. Study the following figure carefully and answer the question given below.

What is the number of people who speak at most one language?

(a) 650

(b) 355

(c) 415

(d) 625

Correct answer: (c)

Explanation:

Number of people who speak at most one language = a + b + c + None

= 110 + 50 + 195 + 60 = 415

Q13. The average salary of all the employees in a small organization is Rs 8,000. The average salary of 7 technicians is Rs 12,000, and the average salary of the rest is Rs 6,000. The total number of employees in the organisation is?

(a) 25

(b) 26

(c) 20

(d) 21

Correct answer: (d)

Explanation:

Let total number of employees be k

Then, 8000 x k = 7 x 12000 + (k - 7) x 6000

k = 21

Thus, the total number of employees in the organization is 21.

Q14. The question given below consists of a question followed by three statements. You have to study the question and the statements and decide which of the statement(s) is/are necessary to answer the question.

Question: In a cricket team, the average age of eleven players is 28 years. What is the age of the captain?

  1. The captain is eleven years older than the youngest player.
  2. The average age of 10 players, other than the captain, is 27.3 years.
  3. Leaving aside the captain and the youngest player, the average ages of three groups of three players each are 25 years, 28 years and 30 years, respectively.

Select correct answer

(a) Any two of the three

(b) All I, II and III

(c) II only or I and III only

(d) II and III only

Correct answer: (c)

Explanation:

Total age of 11 players = (28 x 11) years = 308 years.

I. C = Y + 11      C - Y = 11 .... (i)

II. Total age of 10 players (excluding captain) = (27.3 x 10) years = 273 years.

Age of captain = (308 - 273) years = 35 years. Thus, C = 35. .... (ii)

From (i) and (ii), we get Y = 24

III. Total age of 9 players = [ (25 x 3) + (28 x 3) + (30 x 3)] years = 249 years.

C + Y = (308 - 249) = 59 .... (iii)

From (i) and (iii), we get C = 35.

Thus, II alone gives the answer.

Also, I and III together give the answer. Correct answer is (C).

Q15. A rectangular courtyard 3.78 meters long and 5.25 meters wide is to be paved exactly with square tiles, all of the same sizes. what is the largest size of the tile which could be used for the purpose?

(a) 14 cm

(b) 21 cm

(c) 42 cm

(d) None of the above

Correct answer: (b)

Explanation:

3.78 meters =378 cm = 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 7

5.25 meters=525 cm = 5 × 5 × 3 × 7

Hence common factors are 3 and 7

Hence LCM = 3 × 7 = 21

Hence the largest size of square tiles that can be paved exactly with square tiles is 21cm.
